Dear mr. Sadovnichiy,

I have read reports about ongoing harmful live animal use within the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University (MSU). I have considerable personal experience with these issues, and in 2007 I published the most extensive review to date of studies of student learning outcomes achieved by humane teaching methods in comparison to traditional harmful animal use. I would like to offer my perspective, and also, inquire as to the precise position of MSU on these issues.

No students require the use of animals more than veterinary students. Nevertheless, I successfully completed my veterinary education within Australia from 1997-2001, without participating in any harmful animal use, and am a competent practicing veterinary surgeon today, in London. As a student, I gained my surgical and anesthetic experience by assisting with beneficial procedures in private veterinary clinics and animal shelters. I gained five times the experience of my conventionally trained peers, and also experienced the realism of the diagnostic workups and pre- and postoperative management associated with every surgical case.

Dear Sir or Madam

I wish to show my support of the Biology Students of MSU in their campaign for the end of illegal and inhumane treatment of animals during laboratory experiments.

Regulations are being violated by this University and students are being victimised for standing up to the authorities. This is not acceptable in a civilised country, nor is experimentation on animals.

Dear Chancellor and Honorable Officials,

I am writing in response to concerns of students at Moscow State University regarding vivisection. The students feel that the University unfairly discriminates against people who wish to avoid animal experimentation during their course of studies despite their legal right to do so, and, more ominously, refuses to consider implementing the many valid alternatives to animal usage that are available today. I stand with the students in their desire to discourage the use of animals in the life sciences.

To the Press-secretary of MSU, Chancellor of the MSU Sadovnichiy V.A., and the Dean of the faculty of Biology of MSU Kirpichnikov M.P,

I wish to show my support of the students of the Faculty of Biology of the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University who are protesting against the outdated, unnecessary and unethically cruel treatment of animals as part of their courses. Please update your rules, courses and procedures to meet international ethical standards.

Обращение к руководству Биофака МГУ

Я, Прокофьева Мария Игоревна, выпускница кафедры микробиологии Биологического факультета МГУ (выпуск 1998 года), ныне кандидат биологических наук, научный сотрудник Института микробиологии им. С.Н. Виноградского Российской Академии Наук, пишу данное письмо в поддержку моего коллеги, будущего микробиолога Романа Белоусова и его проблемы альтернативного обучения без применения вивисекции.
